After sedating the patient, the doctor puts a lighted tube (endoscope) down the patient’s throat to view the lining of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine.

The doctor can also use this instrument to take a biopsy, or tissue sample.

A biopsy is the only sure way to determine if tissue is cancerous.
