Lyme disease symptoms can vary greatly but often begin with a characteristic expanding rash (erythema migrans) at the site of a tick bite. Other early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. Later, if untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system causing more serious problems like arthritis, heart palpitations, facial palsy, and neurological issues. However, many people with Lyme disease don't experience the classic rash, and symptoms can mimic many other illnesses. Therefore, you should not attempt self-diagnosis; if you suspect you have Lyme disease, seek immediate medical attention for proper testing and diagnosis by a healthcare professional.

How do I know if I have got Lyme disease?

You can't reliably know if you have Lyme disease just by looking at symptoms or doing a self-diagnosis. Lyme disease symptoms are varied and can mimic many other illnesses. The only way to know for sure if you have Lyme disease is to see a doctor and undergo proper testing.

Here's what to do if you suspect you have Lyme disease:

  • See a doctor immediately: Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing long-term complications.
  • Describe your symptoms thoroughly: This includes any rash (especially the characteristic "bull's-eye" rash, but it's important to note that not everyone gets this), fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Be sure to mention any tick bites you might have had, even if it was weeks or months ago.
  • The doctor will likely perform a physical exam: This will help them assess your overall health and look for any signs of Lyme disease.
  • Blood tests are usually done: These tests look for antibodies to the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. However, it's important to understand that these tests aren't always accurate, especially in the early stages of infection. A negative test doesn't necessarily rule out Lyme disease. Your doctor will interpret the test results in the context of your symptoms and medical history.
  • Additional tests may be needed: Depending on your situation, the doctor might order other tests to rule out other conditions.

Do not attempt to self-treat Lyme disease. Improper treatment can lead to serious long-term health problems. Only a medical professional can accurately diagnose and treat Lyme disease.
