The FDA says bovine growth hormone is safe, although the issue is controversial.
Some consumer advocates and environmental groups are concerned that milk from cows given this hormone may contain substances that are harmful to humans. (No one's claiming that the hormone itself is dangerous, but it may have side effects for the cow, which could lead to other substances turning up in the milk you drink.)
Although some of the hormone given to cows does get into the milk, it turns into a protein that's broken down in your digestive system and doesn't pose a risk to you or your baby.
