LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery used to correct vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It involves using a laser to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, thereby altering how light focuses on the retina, improving visual acuity and reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

The LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgical process involves several key steps:

  • Pre-operative Evaluation: This is crucial to determine candidacy. It includes a comprehensive eye exam, measuring corneal thickness, assessing the shape of your cornea, and determining the refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism). The doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure and answer any questions.
  • Creating the Corneal Flap: A microkeratome (a small, bladed instrument) or a femtosecond laser is used to create a thin, hinged flap on the cornea's surface. The femtosecond laser is more precise and allows for customized flap thickness and shape. The flap is carefully folded back.
  • Reshaping the Cornea: An excimer laser is then used to precisely reshape the underlying corneal tissue. This laser removes microscopic amounts of tissue, correcting the refractive error. The laser is guided by a computer that's programmed based on the pre-operative measurements.
  • Replacing the Corneal Flap: Once the reshaping is complete, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned and allowed to heal naturally. It adheres to the underlying tissue without stitches.
  • Post-operative Care: Post-operative care involves using eye drops (antibiotics, steroids) as prescribed to prevent infection and inflammation. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and vision improvement.

What is LASIK ?

A flap is created, the cornea is reshaped with a laser, and the flap is replaced to heal naturally. The entire procedure typically takes only about 15-20 minutes per eye. However, the pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care are equally important components of the process.
