How is Hodgkin's disease diagnosed?

If Hodgkin's disease is suspected, the doctor will ask about your Medical History and will do a thorough Physical Exam. Blood Tests and X-Rays of the Chest, Bones, Liver and Spleen will also be done.

Tissue from an enlarged Lymph Node will be removed. This is known as a Biopsy. It is the only sure way to tell if cancer is present. A Pathologist will look at the tissue under the Microscope for Reed-Sternberg cells, Abnormal Cells that are usually found with Hodgkin's disease.

When Hodgkin's disease is diagnosed, the doctor needs to know the stage, or extent, of the disease. Knowing the stage is very important for planning treatment. The stage indicates where the disease has spread and how much tissue is affected. In staging, the doctor checks:

In staging, the doctor usually orders several tests, including biopsies of the Lymph Nodes, Liver and Bone Marrow. Many patients have lymphangiograms, X-Rays of the Lymphatic System using a special dye to outline the Lymph Nodes and vessels. Another test is computed Tomography (also called CT or CAT Scan), a series of X-Rays of cross-sections of the body.

Staging Hodgkin's:

Each stage for Hodgkin's disease is further divided by an "A" or "B," based on whether there are certain symptoms called B Symptoms. B Symptoms include the following:

For example, if a patient had stage I disease without any B Symptoms, the patient would have Stage IA Disease; if the patient had stage I disease with B Symptoms, the patient would have Stage IB Disease.

My baby has scaly red patches on her skin that seem to be very itchy. What is this ugly rash?

It sounds like Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis), a skin rash that often appears in the first year of life. Eczema usually shows up on a baby's Forehead, Cheeks, and Scalp, but it can spread to the Arms, Legs, Chest, or other parts of the body.

Your baby's rash might look like dry, thickened, scaly skin, or it might be made up of tiny red bumps that can blister, ooze, or become infected if Scratched. Eczema isn't Contagious, but because it's intensely Itchy, Scratching can be a problem.

What causes heat rash?

Your baby Sweats to Cool down.

If he Sweats so much that his pores clog and Sweat can't get out, Heat rash develops.

(Babies and young children are particularly prone to Heat rash because they have smaller pores than adults do.)

Hot, Humid weather is prime time for Heat rash, but you might see it in winter, too, if your baby is wearing too many layers of clothing or is running a Fever.

Sometimes a baby will get Heat rash after a Cough ointment is rubbed on his Chest.

What is heat rash?

Heat rash, also known as "Prickly heat" or "Summer rash," is an eruption of little bumps (and sometimes tiny Blisters) on the skin that can show up when your Baby overheats.

The bumps may appear red, especially on light skin.

Children of all ages can get Heat rash, but it's most common in babies.

If your baby has Heat rash, you'll most likely see it in the folds of his skin and on parts of his body where his clothing fits snugly, including his Chest, Stomach, Neck, Crotch, and Buttocks.

If he wears hats, the rash may spread across his Scalp or Forehead.
